Our drought continues, we haven’t has any noticeable rain since last October; thank goodness for desalination plants! We have had some pretty chilly weather during February….I know nothing like the UK but we don’t have central heating!

I am pleased to say everything back to normal now that March has arrived; lovely sunny days and warmer nights soon be time to pack away the electric blankets! Found a great new restaurant in Puerto – Kristian’s in the old town of Puerto overlooking the harbour; this one along with La Cabana and El Navarro are constantly in the top 3 on Trip Advisor. Trip Advisor? Unfortunately we have to go with the flow Face book Twitter; all new to me! I am only allowed to pop Solymar on Trip Advisor as that’s the villa I own if anyone out there would write me a review I would be VERY Happy.

Just returned from a fabulous holiday to Australia and New Zealand the weather was most peculiar it was supposed to be their summer! At one point we had 16 feet waves and had to backtrack to attempt to avoid a hurricane. The ship was supposed to be doing 24 knots but was actually going backwards as the wind across the bows was so strong…all good fun!!

The return via Heathrow was a shock to the system it was freezing cold and the country side was covered in snow. All very picturesque but we were glad to return to Lanzarote.

Carol and John as always did a sterling job looking after our clients (and the dogs!)

HAPPY NEW YEAR……GREAT PRICES FOR JANUARY PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR DETAILS

Firstly may we all at Lanzarote Villas Direct wish every single one of you a FANTASTIC Christmas and all the VERY best for the New Year.
As I mentioned in my previous mailing the island is buzzing and everyone is preparing for Christmas. It is lovely to see the churches over here illuminated and soon the nativity scenes will be appearing in all the villages.
I know many of you make the journey ‘up North’ to visit Amanacer the restaurant in Arrieta which has for many years been a firm favourite. Obviously I ask clients staying with us their views on local cuisine and the unanimous view is that both El Largo ( in Punta de Mujeres) and the restaurant on the beach in Arrieta ( NOT the beach bar) are just as good and they don’t feel so rushed. I know what they mean, you do feel you are on a conveyor belt and service although excellent is very rushed. If you prefer a lazy lunch overlooking the ocean, try one of these I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Lastly Kate has been developing our Face book page if you would like to add and comments or become a friend we would love to welcome you.
To conclude, my VERY best wishes again for Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year.
We hope to welcome clients old and new in 2012.

Hello again.
I am often asked if the recession has hit Lanzarote? Last year was pretty grim and there still is a lot of unemployment BUT what I can say is those businesses that are well organised and treat their clients as they should are thriving. La Cabana our favourite restaurant on the island is bouncing; Debbie is turning clients away. I am so thrilled for them as they have worked so hard to build up their stunning little restaurant. If you haven’t been its a MUST! I am happy to book for you.
There are places that are closing and this is sad but these to be honest were disorganised and thought they were going to get rich quick…no way, success in business takes hard work and planning but most important clients must be the focus. Lanzarote had it so good for many years but now they are realising that success does not just come on a plate you have to work for it. There is a big push at the moment to make Lanzarote welcoming to tourists..much over due but this is definitely the way forward.
There are many activities taking place over the next few weeks I will try to let you know what’s going on when you get here. We always try to leave a Gazette or look on line at the ‘Lanzarote Guide book’.
15 years ago when we moved over here Christmas was not celebrated…WOW you ought to see the shops now!!! The Spanish children LOVE it…Father Christmas and the Kings on the 6th Double fun!
If you are coming over in December DO visit the Christmas market on Saturday in Arrecife..great fun and really worth visit.
Don’t forget we have some availability in December. We would LOVE to welcome you.
Take care and Keep Smiling
Jan xx
Sorry for the lack of news we have been off gadding again…this time back to England on to New York for 3 days then jumped on a boat to cruise up through New England into Quebec; rather lovely it was too. The whole point of the trip was to see the fall but after 6 days we did not see one leaf even thinking about turning; then we reached Quebec and WOW!!!!! Fantastic city and picture postcard leaf colours. We then flew up to Toronto for a few days before returning to Lanzarote.
Carole and John have again held the fort for us they are still here and Maurice and Jack just ignore us of course….RATS!!!!!
STOP PRESS
One of our lovely regular clients had a nasty fall this afternoon on wet tiles (DO watch this!) Jayne went down to the general hospital with them as they had no Spanish. All were so absolutely raving about the wonderful service they had with a 5 minute wait in casualty. We are so lucky to have this caring facility.
If anyone fancies a break I have some great offers in November/December have a peek above and get in touch; I will give you the best possible deal….until next week.
Jan xxx
As many of you probably are aware we ask our guests to leave any information that’s worth passing on to future guests. Restaurants or any interesting visits etc.
When I was cleaning Solymar this morning I looked at the board and read the following. I am sure the client won’t mind me sharing it with you
‘If you can tear yourself away from the lovely pool deck and fancy something a bit different, try a cycle ride.
Take your sun cream and a bottle of water and get there early (about 10am) to get the best bikes
Drive past the airport and turn towards Puerto Del Carmen then follow the signs to MATAGORDA. Go to the end of the road and park (near the start of the runway) Walk toward PDC and the cycle shop is on the right.
Ask for the city bikes (basic bikes have no gears and don’t bother with mountain bikes) they charge 10 per day but we only used them for about 3 hours. Head for the tall building ( the Arrecife Grand) it looks a long way but it’s quite flat and paved all the way; take regular stops to admire the view. You can go right into the centre of Arrecife without going on any roads.
On the way back we stopped at one of the many bars for a well earned pint. A FANTASTIC day.
Sound fun doesnt it? We may give it a try.
Have a great weekend.
Jan x
Good grief, September already where has the year gone…a sign of old age I hear you say!
After our peculiar August the lovely weather has returned and we are being treated to the most fantastic sunrises and sunsets. I know many of you are familiar with Arrieta beach bar and the beach itself. I went down a few days ago to photograph local scenes it was low tide and the setting sun refelecting on the shore line was magical.
We have some great restaurants ‘up North’ I would suggest lunch time or early evening they don’t follow the Spanish late eating up here, get here before 8pm. I recommend El Largo ( just entering Punta Mujeres; Amanacer in Arrieta; the beach bar of course and the restaurant on the sea a little further on is also excellent.
If you are in Nazaret I have given up trying to convince LargOmar that my guests do NOT want to be charged 5€ to go round the museum if they are having lunch. Please note that they no longer do the lovely tapas only individually priced dishes. I think it’s a rip off, I got stung last week, never again!
Do however try the restaurant just down the road, they are really friendly and of course no worries driving!
For my adventurous readers a new scooter hire has opened in Puerto near to Burger King. Personally I would not fancy it knowing some of the loopy drivers on this island!
We have been chopping down a MASSIVE Bougainville in the grounds of the house this week; nightmare of a job.
Those of you who stay in the casita I know will miss it but it was blocking out the neighbours light. FAB bonfire, fortunately I did not get arrested! We now face the task of moving 15 years of leaf fall!
More news as it happens but Morris and Jack are whittling to be taken a walk,
Have a great weekend
Jan x
I have today received booking requests from two owners. They have taken advantage of Easy Jets ‘ Early bird’ prices and got in quickly for next year. This really is the way to do it now; no last minute bargains they seem to increase prices! If you are thinking of visiting us next year I suggest you GET IN EARLY and bag those good deals! See you soon
Jan x
Our perfect August weather has returned and there is no better way to enjoy them than a lazy lunch at Famara. This little village fascinates me, so totally unspoilt, it has a wonderful feel and is so typically Spanish.
As you eat your lunch you watch the children jumping off the nearby jetty screaming with delight; an older lady in Spanish costume helping her husband to pull in their fishing boat onto the sand; toddlers have their first fun day on the beach watched adoringly by their proud parents; daft dogs splash in the sea chasing after their owners lazing on inflatable’s…brilliant!
At one point a local fisherman emptied his scraps into the sea and at least 50 gulls scream to get a share of the spoils, it was amazing they did not collide.
If you turn round just 90% the view of the bay and the kite surfers is mind blowing all set against a backdrop of those majestic cliffs; in the distance the island of La Graciosa is shrouded in a heat haze.
The whole place was just magical.
Restaurants such as this are not cheap but if you are selective avoid the pricy dishes (we have lots of starters in the middle of the table and all dip in you will have sufficient truly) the experience is well worth the effort…Do try it Restaurant Sol at Famara.
Chris and Berna have made some lovely alterations to Casa Leon and I have updated the photos on the website.
As you will see I have vacancies in September, if you can get a reasonable flight price why not join us? Just drop me an E mail.
Untill next time, have fun.
Jan xx
Well a VERY weird week although it has been warm we have had cloud most mornings and it’s July. Fortunately the sun has come out at about 12 noon and then the clients were happy; saying that one lay out in the cloud for 3 hours and had to go to hospital with bad burnt legs so never under estimate the power of the sun here.
I always feel terrible when clients have saved up for their annual break and the weather does not come up to expectations; this is why it is so important to have plenty to do in the villas covering this eventuality.
The island is in full swing and the added flights have given everywhere a real buzz…recession? I can’t see any evidence of it over here. The restaurants are re opening (June/July is the time many are shut) I know our local Amanacar opens tomorrow…there will be queues outside waiting for their ‘catch of the day’
I have heard today that you can book tickets for the main tourist attractions on Lanzarote such as the Jameos del Agua and the Timanfaya National Park can now be purchased direct on-line for the first time. Thanks to the launch of a new service on the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism website. All good news making accessibility easier for our guests
I think that’s everything for now, more updates as I think of them
Have a great weekend…….. Jan x
As you are aware we try to keep all our villas in tip top condition offering you our clients the best value we possibly can. I am therefore pleased to say that all our accommodation has internet availability.
There are lots of things going on the island at last they are taking on board that tourism is its life blood and there are lots of events on offer. We always ensure that there is a recent copy of the Lanzarote Gazette in your villa so check out ‘What’s on’ There is every possibility that there may be an excellent concert or top sporting event.
At last the new road approach to Nazaret is nearing completion quite why it has been done I know not but do take care as we say ‘Only in Lanzarote’
See you soon I hope
Jan x
Interesting just enter the village/ street of where you want to go to.
Jayne saw the Google vans going around about 6 weeks ago.
Just returned from a break in the Baltic Sea absolutely stunning! Carole & John again held the fort for us and as always have done a wonderful job…thank you both very much. As usual we got a quick lick from the dogs and then they went off with the ‘sitters’…great!
As you can see we have some availability in June/July and if you want a quick break the weather is great and the flights reasonable; just drop me a line.
More later but I have a lot of catching up to do.
Jan x

Iron man today how those people do it I do not know! I must say full credit to the police who organise the whole thing so efficiently.
The studio apartments are really going down well, with the cheap flights and £199 a week you can’t go wrong.
If you want to have a winter away £650 for a month, I think that’s really good value, they are lovely and we now have 3 to offer so 6 friends could come away together. No, we haven’t won the lottery but good friends have purchased 403 which of course has been totally refurbished.
Have a great weekend!
Jan x
Well you asked to see them and here they are, Lucas Milo and Leo William. Mand sent me the latest photo a few days ago and Leo went for his first swim yesterday! He was VERY good, not a tear was shed.
May & June are quieter months and flights are usually more reasonable. I will give you the best deal I can if you feel like coming over for a break
Pretty hot here at the moment with temperatures in the high 20’s, get those flights booked!
With the budget airlines introducing more and more flights you can get a flight over here very cheaply if you look around. The key seems to be to get in early, as soon as the flights are released get yours booked. These daily arrivals are enough to make me hit the bottle but never mind get the best deal you can. Gone are the Thursday only arrivals!
It is lovely when clients who we haven’t heard from for a while mail me to say they are missing the island, a few just pop over for a few days…as long as we have availability you are welcome to come whatever day you like.
Take care
Jan x
Well we all enjoyed the wedding Leo waved his flag and we had a great party with friends in Macher. Full patriotic red white and blue dress and glued to the screen until 4 pm. We thought it was brilliant! Such a change to have good news and smiles.
This week we have had some rain……Oh yes we have….great for the gardens but not so good for the clients!
Our first two families have completed their holiday in Casa Galles and I have had great feedback. Apparently the children were very impressed with the massive flat screen TV.
Bookings are good and our regular clients have already booked their holidays for 2012. Don’t leave it too late if you want to stay in the villa of your choice.
Have a lovely May Day tomorrow and I hope the good weather lasts.
Have fun!
Jan xx
A VERY HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL
We hear you are experiencing great weather in the UK long may it last! Royal wedding? Everyone seems to be very excited? We too are having a party, bucks fizz at 8.30 am and then everyone bringing a dish. I have been given instructions to download the service!
The Ryan Air flights are a great hit with our visitors but not much good for my brain Kate tells me it will keep it active and will be as good as crosswords which I HATE.
We have arrivals on everyday of the week now. Gone are the Thursday changeovers I am now taking first come first served; please check availability before booking you flight.
At last the new duel carriage way approach to Nazaret is completed it was a 6 month nightmare but it is quite straight forward.
The island is very busy which is great for the economy you will be pleased to hear it hasn’t affected the peace and quiet of our villas.
LagOmar restaurant has re-opened lunch served from 1pm and dinner in the evening. Don’t forget to try the new one down the road I have had very good reports it is open at lunchtime & in the evenings do give it a try.
I am now going to study a long complicated instruction manual which hopefully is going to tell me how to pop photos on this blog….wish me luck!
Jan x
More restaurant news!
I mentioned that the restaurant had opened in Nazaret (as you turn off the main road) a couple of our clients have been and have been very pleased, it’s certainly worth giving it a try AND you can have a drink without worry. Open from 1 pm.
The shop in Nazaret is now open every day including Sunday morning as is the chicken take away in Tahiche which I know a few of you really love.
I have been a couple of times to Restaurant SOL in Famara village. It is under new ownership and is FANTASTIC. Great setting beautifully presented food and very reasonable. As you enter the village take the first dirt track on the right and head for the sea; you will see SOL on your right hand side. The beach side is lovely but get there by 1pm at lunch time
On the other side of the bay (where the bungalows are) another restaurant has opened specialising in Thai food. It’s an experience but well worth it; again not too expensive.
Easter is nearly here…may I wish all readers a lovely break with your families.
Jan xxx
I am delighted to let you know that the restaurant at the bottom of the road as you enter Oasis de Nazaret has re opened LOS LANOS
I called in today and was welcomed with open arms. It opens daily at 1pm and closes at 11am, it closes on Tuesday. I really would recommend you to try it, everything is freshly cooked by a very enthusiastic chef; it is within walking distance to the villas, so no driving problems. I think the prices are very fair too.
March 27th
Lots of news, the studio apartments in Puerto is finished and our first gusts are already in! You can have a look on the home page of the website ‘luxury breaks for 2’ we are really pleased with the finished project and they do offer real luxury at a very reasonable price.
I am happy to let you know that we have another villa in our portfolio, Casa Galles. I know my ‘regulars’ will be very happy with this villa it’s in a lovely location and the views are spectacular. Bryan and Pam the owners have lovingly refurbished it to a very high standard.
After a few rainy days which dip give us a bad weather blip we are back to normal and the island looks fantastic. The flowers near Guinate are breathtaking at the moment. We really have had a wonderful winter and do appreciate how lucky we are to live on this lovely island.
We have an influx of guests arriving next week, we will be sad to see Carole and John return to the UK. They have been brilliant, helping Kate & Mark over the last 3 months while we awaited Leo’s arrival. I rather think they may be back sooner than later………Many many thanks to both of you. xxxxx

Hello again my apologies for the lack of news I have been distracted just a little by the birth of my second grandson Leo William- 2 in 3 months is not bad going!
Mand, Kate, Lucas and Leo are doing just fine. Thank you so much for the messages of congratulation I have received from my clients.
What’s been going on? We have purchased two studio apartments in Puesto Del Carmen; a lovely quiet complex above the old town. The location is perfect in the ‘posh’ part. Aly and Donny own one, Jayne and myself the other. What we liked was the peace and quiet and the closeness to all amenities. You really do not need a car everything is within walking distance. I will put photos on the website as soon as the finishing touches are in place, hopefully next week they will be in the ‘luxury accommodation for 2’ section.
More at the weekend.
Jan xx
February 10th
The glorious weather continues….truly wonderful. I have been inundated with requests for February half term due to the unfortunate unrest in Egypt; sadly I have not been able to help as everything is booked.
We discovered a lovely new restaurant’ in Playa Honda a few weeks ago, we have always liked Emax but Manhattanoffers something a little different. The décoris lovely the music just my taste, the food excellent and views spectacular. I always try a few times before recommending, it was a birthday treat for Carole today (the lady who is helping us, withJohn her husband – while we await the birth of my second grandson. I know you like to know who’s who and what’s what!) absolutely brilliant.
The walk along Playa Honda from Arrecife to the airport is great especially the section towards the airport. I remember it used to be a bit seedy…no longer; it’s lively and vibrant well worth a visit. I love the way they have accommodated a cycle track and there are exercise machines dotted along the path for those who get the urge. When you get towards the airport itself the beach there is really lovely and I find it fascinating watching the planes arriving and departing.
We always try to be one step ahead of the competition. Firstly it was Sky TV, then washing machines; dishwashers; electric pool heaters…now everyone wants WI If. I am trying to get this sorted in the villas but unfortunately I have to charge for the facility. I haven’t put the prices up in the villas and it seems unfair to charge clients for a facility they don’t want to access. The internetservice over here is VERY expensive compared to England, we pay 60€ a month for the phone line and internet in Solymar. We have recently installed an ariel on the roof so Luca and Shibui can receive it. I have thought it through and feel that 10€ a week is a fair price for connection. If you wish to use this please let me know and I will let you have the password.
We continue to patiently wait for the arrival of baby no name – Kate says she will know what she will call him when she sees him!!! I hope it doesn’t compare with the names she has called her animals….Troy, Guanche…
She is fine and I think we will definitely have him with us next week one way or another..Watch this space!
7 pm and just getting dark..Time for Emmerdale….
More news as it happens
Keep smiling
Jan xxx
Sunday February 6th
Still no news of the expected arrival.
Jan xx
Friday January 28th
Hi again, well the weather could not last……we have had a few real downpours but the temperature is still in the 20’s so there are no complaints; the gardens and plants so needed it.
Really we have had a fantastic winter and Christmas /New Year was just brilliant. I haven’t got much available for next Christmas so if you are thinking of coming over please get in quickly.
Kate has at last conceded that she is human and pregnant and went into retirement for a few weeks on Monday. She is doing fine and the baby is due in February around Valentine’s Day. Baby Lucas in Argentina is also doing really well and it is lovely to chat to them all on SKYPE.
There seems to be a whole new dimension to holiday bookings this year which I am finding very frustrating! I get an E mail at the weekend saying ‘booked flights can we come on in 4 days time?’ I do so want our clients to have a great holiday experience, anyone who is leaving it that late is going to get other companies ‘left overs’ and that is such a pity. All our villas are booked up for January & February; I have some weeks in March available.
John (the owner of Albarino) has updated my PDF files letting you know about local restaurant changes and the new duel carriageway leading up to Tahiche. The island is really on the up, I hope you have read some of the excellent articles that have appeared in the quality newspapers in the UK? At last we have shed the ‘Lanzagrotty’ image, it was so unfair.
We purchased a studio apartment IN PuertoDel Carmen last month; very small only to sleep 2 but in a lovely area above the old town. Aly & Donny have purchased the one next door. We have been working for the last couple of weeks and have been impressed how select and quiet the complex is. Sooo….if you fancy a sunny break in Carmen? Watch this space!
I think that’s all for January, I will post news as it happens. Wrap up warm!
Keep smiling! Jan xxx

Oh good grief what has happened? The UK seems to have closed down!
Fortunately most of our clients have arrived for Christmas we are keeping everything crossed that our last party arrives safely tomorrow.
I have just returned from a lovely lunch at Largomar, the restaurant is not open in the evening yet but our tapas lunch was excellent and not expensive, well worth a visit.
Only one week to go….May I wish every one of our clients a VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS and everything they would wish for themselves in 20011.
May I thank you for your past support and hopefully we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Lanzarote next year.
Take care and all the best

Tuesday 14th December
Everywhere is getting ready for Christmas and we have been busily trimming up the villas for our Christmas guests.
When we first came to the island little was made of Christmas. Christmas Eve for the Spanish is very family orientated and the shops and restaurants close early to enable everyone to be together. Their big celebration is on 12 night, this is when the Kings arrived at Bethlehem with their gifts for Jesus and the children get theirs too.
Even sleepy Tabayesco children get a visit from the 3 kings transported not on camels but 4 X4’s
The only availability I have is for NEW YEAR in our friend Alf’s casita ‘Tres Palmeras’
December 27th – January 6th
If you want peace quiet and a great seafront location this bungalow is a treasure and really does take some beating for value for money. £399 for 2 people £499 for 4.
Bookings are well up on last year and certainly are not being affected by the recession. Everyone needs a holiday so if you wish to visit us next year please don’t leave it too late.
You know we would love to welcome you.
Keep warm over there!

THE ONLY CHRISTMAS AVAILABILITY
Tres Palmeras sea front aspect sleeps 4
December 27th – January 6th
My friend James, who does my web design, tells me that the point of this news letter is to leave the previous news items on it! What a nut I am. I must drag myself into this new age.
This week we have had rain, yes we do have it. Mind you it’s been a pleasant 20+ degrees. On the UK news just now it gave the impression that the Canaries was snow bound….rubbish!
A good soaking makes such a difference to the island the whole place sparkles.
I know many of you comment on the PDF file I send to you before arrival. I must thank my friend John Brakband for this (owner of Albarino) You will be pleased to hear he is re vamping it for 2011 bringing everything up to date.
Please remember the information we put in this is as we find it on the day. Unfortunately chefs change quite regularly and restaurants that we are really excited about can change overnight; I do try to warn clients of any BIG changes.
LagOmarfor example has undergone drastic changes in the last few months the Museum is now a separate section altogether it’s worth a visit. The restaurant however is no more you can get coffee and cake but we are hoping for the return of the fab lunch time tapas and evening meals that I know you have all enjoyed in the past. I will keep you posted on what is happening there.
Thank you for the messages of congratulations I have received for the arrival of Lucas, they are all doing really well. Just Kate & Mark’s little one to look forward to.
Thanks for reading and more next week
Warm regards

I know a lot of my regular clients read my updates so I am pleased to let you know that Mand had a baby boy yesterday 6lb 9 ounces Lucas Milo. She had to have a caesarean but both mum and baby are doing well.
One down one to go!
Please remember if you wish to have your favourite villa for your holiday next year please get in early, it gets quite manic around Christmas time.
Thank you for reading
